Flea and Tick Season is Coming

It is getting warmer which means flea and tick season is upon us. If you see your pet scratching excessively, it is a good idea to check for fleas. Most common way is using a flea comb and running it against the direction of hair growth to spot flea dirt (which looks like red specks). Flea dirt is typically found on the stomach and base of the tail.

What are some ways to protect your pets against fleas and ticks?

  • Check their skin and coat regularly for any signs of itching or redness. It's easier addressing it early on.
  • Have your pet on a regular flea and tick program. If you suspect your pet is sensitive to traditional medication, we have several natural options that work really well.
  • Clean and vacuum your home regularly, especially if you have carpets. Typically what we see on our pet, is only 10% of the flea population, the rest are in your home.
  • If you have a yard, consider beneficial nematodes, they are microscopic organisms that destroy pests without harming your plants or environment.
  • Inspect your dog after you go hiking since they are more likely to pick up ticks along the way.
